When you are a small start-up it’s easier to be disruptive and innovative, but once you become an established brand or indeed the market leader, then it becomes a tougher task to be the brightest voice in the room.
Today VMware has got little left to prove. Its first foray into the market stopped the proliferation of physical servers pretty much dead in its tracks and laid the seeds for the Cloud computing revolution we are currently witnessing. The reality is VMware now finds itself in a position of having to respond to the major trend in IT deployments.
VMware’s traditional consumer market is undoubtedly shrinking as Cloud deployments (particularly SaaS) start to move the decision process out of the normal domain of the central IT department, whilst many a cloud provider where these applications may be migrating to could be powered by VMware the revenues they receive will probably not be on the same scale. Also with the speed of change within the DevOPs and Open Source community there is more a more pressure to deliver these Cloud engines on alternative (theoretically cheaper) platforms.
